The Standard (SG): Hotel Review

Looking for a nice hotel near Orchard Road? The Standard Singapore might be just for you!
The Standard Singapore is nestled on Orange Grove Road. The location and the hotel itself make it feel like an urban oasis. It’s tucked away just enough from the bustling main strip to feel like a hidden garden retreat, but you’re still within walking distance (or a quick ride) of Orchard MRT and the UNESCO-listed Singapore Botanic Gardens.
When I found out that The Standard Hotel had opened in Singapore, I knew I wanted to try it. I’ve always liked its stylish, design-forward vibe. Furthermore, its property in Singapore is located near Orchard, making it convenient for my quick trip.
Rooms & Design
Interiors: Created by Standard International’s in-house team in collaboration with the Ministry of Design, the aesthetic blends rich textures, wood fixtures, vibrant pops of color, and art-led details.
The Space: The eight-floor property features 143 rooms and suites. All rooms come with floor-to-ceiling windows framing either city views or the lush greenery and pool.
Amenities: Expect plush 300-thread-count cotton sheets, custom Davines bath products, smart TVs, Bluetooth speakers, and Nespresso/KopiHouse coffee setups.
The room type that I booked is a Cozy Single Pool View for one person. I loved my view so much! I think it’s definitely great. I booked my hotel through Booking.com with a special 20% off food & drink promotion, and I chose the package with breakfast included. The check-in time is 3:00 PM, while check-out is the standard 12:00 PM (noon).
I arrived at the hotel early and I was lucky enough to get an early check-in so I could drop off my bags before heading out to my favorite brunch spot, Merci Marcel, with my best friend.
The room has all the necessities that you would need—like tea, coffee, and water—and all the bathroom amenities are well-stocked.
One thing that I thought was cool about the hotel is the bright yellow interior. Who would have thought that yellow would make a good bathroom color? The only thing that I don’t like about Singapore in general—and this hotel—is that it does not have a bidet. As a Thai person, I’m used to using a bidet, so I wish they had one too!
Dining & Social Spaces
Since it’s a small boutique hotel, don’t expect many F&B outlets. They have only two restaurants:
Kaya at The Standard: A bold, modern take on a Japanese izakaya serving up contemporary Japanese plates and drinks.
Café Standard: An all-day café serving coffee, casual bites, and burgers that transitions into an easygoing happy hour spot.
The pool area is tucked away like a secret garden and also serves as a cocktail bar, but when I was there, I didn't see any bartender. Besides all of these, they also have cute greenery around the hotel with open-air green spaces spanning the lower floors for laid-back hangs. For me, this is sufficient because I spent most of my time outside anyway.
If there’s one thing I love about staying in a nice hotel, it’s the breakfast. The Standard, Singapore serves its breakfast at Kaya at The Standard. They don’t do a buffet, but they offer a sophisticated à la carte menu. To be honest, the menu choices are limited and may not be as extensive compared to my experiences in other hotels.
Still, I knew I had to work up an appetite, so I got up early and went for a lovely morning walk from the hotel to the Singapore Botanic Gardens and back, just in time to savor a yummy breakfast.
I tried not to overeat because I knew I was going to have lunch with a friend, but it was hard to resist. I had the udon laksa, which is my favorite, and I also got a simple avocado, bacon, and egg dish, as well as ending the meal on a sweet note with the Ogura croffle. Ogura is chunky, sweet red bean paste, and I thought it was a good dessert because it wasn't overly sweet and it paired well with my morning hot latte. Oh, I have to mention that the sambal here is delicious.
Time to Check-Out
Overall, I really enjoyed my stay because it was conveniently located to where I wanted to go—quick shopping at Orchard, a greenery vibe with great access to the Singapore Botanic Gardens, which I’ll tell you more about in a separate blog post. The room is compact and I got just what I needed, and the hotel has some nice small details here and there.
If you are traveling solo or with a friend, this is a hotel for you. But if you are traveling with family, I think it might not have enough space or facilities for you and your children. I paid 256 SGD per night, so it’s definitely not cheap for a boutique hotel. But it’s quite common in Singapore for hotels to be very expensive. In a similar area, there is another good hotel I stayed at before called Yotel, so you can do a comparison to see which one suits you better.
Singapore is my second home because of the friendships that I made over the years, and I'm glad that I got to add The Standard, Singapore to my hotel list. I hope to try more hotels in Singapore next time!
